I saw the world through the canvas of my mind,
I saw that city, bustling with its hustle and bustle,
I saw it, wandering through the village and the town,
And a question came to my mind: where did so many people come from?
People have come into this world like leaves,
Scattered like leaves, who cares for whom?
Who gives a thought to whom? Like scattered that have run,
Like scattered dry leaves, who will gather them?
The saints say that in this world of illusion, from where has man come?
There is no space; wherever you look, it is man upon man.
When the web of illusion is broken, one sees who is human and who is beast.
Man has scattered himself in the intoxication of ego.
Many people call this world the market of Bhabsagar,
Man has come into this world, whose lineage lies on the shore or beyond.
Someone has played many a game, staked their life's wager across it all,
Someone has searched for themself; where did they come from?
And who knows where they found their home.
People have come like leaves, and nonsense has become rife.
Who knows true knowledge? Many spend their days in idle chatter,
Who has any idea where it came from? In this world, so full of ignorance,
Who is that rare person who seeks out knowledge, my friend?
In this world of illusion, people earn a great deal of money; who has the time to ponder deeply?
Under the sway of illusion, people have become terribly busy; there is no time to think about what one truly wants to become.
People are so preoccupied with their homes and families that nothing gets done here.
Mankind has come like leaves, flitting about here and there.
Humans have their hearts set on this world. How is vata formed?
This is the thinking of the clever people, who have pondered this matter,
Where did I come from, and where must I go? In this world of illusion, where is my place?
With everything in this world coming and going, where is the true place?
Some people have grown very arrogant, showing off mightily,
In their speech and their conduct, these egotists are utterly absorbed,
Who has never understood where they came from or where they must go?
The clever and the learned have realised that this world is like a maze.
Some came into the world and just passed through, some had a grand joy,
Some came into the world to live. Perhaps someone searched,
Some came into the world to get much knowledge, but if it is not true knowledge,
Then what is the meaning of that knowledge?
Without true knowledge, no one understands where so many people came from.
There's a huge crowd here, but no one wants to learn a lesson.
It's rare to find someone trustworthy, extremely rare to find a person who can teach you how to live.
I've seen everyone here wanting to conquer the world.
When the time comes to work, they are useless.
People are plentiful here, as are the virtuous;
Millions you may find, but how many are truly humane?
Here, people are forgetting the very essence of humanity,
Humanity is the greatest religion; if you fail to understand this,
You will remain ensnared in the bondage of birth and death; what will you truly gain?
Great people have said, do not live a worthless life,
Live your life in such a way that you become an example to the world,
And may there be none like you; a human is like a leaf.
There are millions of people here; who keeps tabs on whom?
Coming and going have continued since eternity, which God has made this web of illusion?
1. Impermanence of Life and Comparison with Leaves:-
In this poem, human life is compared to dry leaves with deep poignant intensity. Just as leaves fall from a tree, get scattered here and there by gusts of wind, and there is no one to gather them, in the exact same way, a human being enters this world and eventually dissolves into it silently. The crowd in this world has grown so immense that no one has the time to check on others. This fact reminds us of how ephemeral our existence is in this vast creation. The end of life is certain, yet humans forget this truth and are running blindly in the worldly rat race.
2. The Illusion of Maya and the Impact of Busyness:-
In this poem, I have highlighted the bitterest reality of modern society: how people have completely submerged themselves in the blind race of earning wealth and illusions (Maya). The world has become a marketplace where everyone is running solely after material pleasures and selfish motives. Due to this extreme busyness, humans are left with no time even for themselves. People have become so entangled in family and society that they have lost the capacity to think about the true purpose of their lives. Under the influence of Maya, humans today have become devoid of consciousness and are working merely like machines.
3. The Darkness of Ego and Ignorance:-
According to my experience, most people in this world are intoxicated by ignorance, ego, selfishness, lust, and violence. People constantly flaunt their wealth, power, and status, but they forget that they came empty-handed and will depart empty-handed. In the absence of someone who can impart true knowledge, people waste their entire lives in meaningless, absurd, and nonsensical chatter. Moreover, many individuals are so blinded by ego that they get infuriated if anyone talks about wisdom. Most people fail to understand the difference between being a 'human' and a 'beast'. Until this illusion of the world shatters, humanity cannot attain true self-realization.
4. Self-Discovery and the Rarity of True Knowledge:-
Another key point in this poem is that very few people reflect upon the real questions arising in their minds during the journey of life. "Where have I come from, and where do I have to go?"—only the wise and discerning search for the answer to this question. In the labyrinth of this world, countless people are born and die, but individuals who pursue self-discovery are certainly rare. In this world, bookish or worldly knowledge holds no value until one attains 'true wisdom'. Only true knowledge can liberate us from this illusion and the endless cycle of birth and death.
5. The Decline of Humanity and the Lack of Selfless Love:-
In today's scenario, it deeply saddens me that among a crowd of millions, finding true lovers of humanity and trustworthy people has become extremely difficult. I have seen people talking big and wanting to conquer the world, but when times of crisis arrive, hardly anyone comes to help. Humans are gradually forgetting the religion of humanity. Through this poem, I have attempted to convey the message that humanity is the greatest and truest religion. If we fail to understand this, our lives are futile. Great people are those who, instead of living a worthless life (a life of 'two cents'), become an inspiring example for society.
Conclusion:-
The main conclusion of this poem is that human life is extremely rare and precious, and losing it to ego, useless chatter, and futile busyness is a sign of great foolishness and ignorance. This world is like an illusion and a labyrinth, where the cycle of coming and going has been continuing since eternity. I am trying to alert people that instead of becoming part of the crowd and losing their identity, every human should engage in self-introspection and seek true knowledge. The meaning of life does not lie in accumulating material wealth, but in adopting the religion of humanity and presenting a unique example before society, so that our existence does not just scatter away like dry leaves.
