Understanding the Mind: A Journey Through Struggle and Illusion

A thoughtful person sitting alone under a starry sky, surrounded by abstract shapes and faces in the clouds, representing the struggle and illusions of the mind.

Who am I in the world of struggle?
And where do I stand in a life full of struggle?
I thought about it many times in my mind,
I could not understand anything,
I was very confused. How far can the mind expand?

I have seen many wise people,
I have seen many knowledgeable and learned people,
No one could remove the confusion of the mind,
No one could understand what the mind really is.

I found everyone entangled in the world of struggle,
No one could understand why everyone is involved in the struggle,
Everyone has a problem in their mind, and no one has solved it.
Perhaps no one has understood that things get made and spoiled in the mind.

Happiness in the mind and sadness in the mind,
Hope in the mind and happiness in the mind,
The string of the mind is tied between hope and despair,
The mind is a dweller of illusion, and it does manipulation.

In this world of struggle, the mind has kept everyone confused,
Sometimes it works for some people, but not for others.
Never works according to one's wishes for anyone,
Only a few people have understood this double-play of the mind.

Sometimes, some people say this,
The mind is very beautiful, everyone says the same thing.
The beauty of the mind has kept everyone confused,
The games of the mind have kept everyone confused.

Very few people understand what the mind says,
The mind is the king; everyone runs after the mind.
The mind thinks about truth and lies,
Everyone is a slave of the mind; they don't understand anything.

The feelings of the mind change like this,
In the feelings of the mind, some are mine and some are like strangers,
In the illusion of the mind, we are left behind,
Except for ourselves, everyone else is like stranger.

How far can we know the extent of the mind?
All beings are in the control of the mind,
All beings think in their mind,
All beings run after their mind.

Who is the mind? We don't know the mind,
How far can we know the expanse of the mind?
Who is the scholar who knows the definition of the mind?
The mind is very clever and very wise.

No one could understand the feelings of the mind,
The mind is very intelligent; no one could understand it.
How far has the mind expanded?
Only a rare person could understand the games of the mind.

Mind is hope, and it is stale,
It is well within the grip of mind,
Clever people try to get out of the grip of their minds,
The mind is stubborn. Yogis try to control it.

There is a big confusion in the mind, people think themselves to be very clever,
People are very much entangled in the illusions and have lost a lot here.
The mind gives hope here, it says I am something,
The heart is filled with emotions. People try their best.

Sometimes the mind does good deeds, it says, do more.
If you do good deeds, your good deeds will increase. People commit many sins,
Being trapped in the mind, people commit many injustices,
As you sow, so shall you reap; you will be punished a lot.

The mind’s conflict I couldn’t grasp—now win, now lose,
Ignorant ones roam, causing chaos and ruse.
In knowledge and ignorance, the mind sways,
Fools, though unwise, claim victory always.

Sometimes the mind becomes a saint, talks about knowledge,
By becoming a saint, it serves filth, and by showing arrogance,
Sometimes this mind becomes a saint, sometimes it becomes a thief,
There is filth in our minds; we are good people, but we make noise.

No one understands the manipulations of the mind, and we blame each other,
Here, the mind is a hero and a villain; we blame each other,
This world says that the mind has lost its senses,
People here regret suffering losses due to fights and quarrels.

The mind is beautiful here; it controls everyone.
It attracts everyone here, and it gives pleasure to everyone.
There is a lot of commotion in the world, which gives inspiration to everyone.
The mind makes everyone dance here; the world is in the control of the mind.

The world is engrossed in the pleasures of the mind; the world is confused in the illusions of the mind.
The world is trapped in the tricks of the mind, and the world is hit by the mind.
No one understands the drama of the mind; everything is a game of the mind.
Even the great experts have failed in trying to understand what the mind is.

People understand their mind here, they speak their mind,
The mind gets upset here in the eyelids, emotions are born,
If things don't go as per the wish, they create differences,
In the snake-trap of the mind, the tongue gets confused, and there are clashes.

There was a conflict in the mind, nobody could understand.
The fool and the wise speak the same language, but who belongs to whom?
Smile on the face, cleverness in speech is not necessary to be a saint,
Saint by heart, saint by body, such people are one or two in thousands, lakhs.

Sometimes this mind goes there, we love a lot,
Being a true lover, we fulfil our love,
In deception, these minds are shattered; they get ruined,
By becoming a true lover, the mind feels happy.

Sadhus, scholars and wise people say, What is the thought in your mind,
As you think in your mind, you behave,
As you think in your mind, so you see the world,
People with narrow-mindedness indulge in plundering, but saints make the world.

No one could cross here by cheating,
Saint says, as you sow, so shall you reap; everything is subject to the mind.
The world has been hit by the blow of the mind, and it has become miserable,
Saints say the mind is very fickle; it is beyond understanding.

In the human body, the mind is a unique element without which human life is nearly impossible. The mind plays a central role in our daily actions and thoughts. Many have tried to understand the mind, and every person on this earth strives to comprehend it. Even yogis exert great effort to grasp it, yet understanding the mind is no easy task. The mind has a certain momentum, and even yogis and saints undertake great penance to still it, often meeting with failure. This is why Lord Krishna, in the Mahabharata, tells Arjuna, “To control the mind is like taming the wind.”

In essence, the mind is peculiar and restless by nature, which is why we must engage it in every task. Due to its inherent nature, most people fail to understand it. The mind harbours desires, tensions, various thoughts, hopes, and despairs. It drives humans in myriad ways. Who, after all, is the mind? Sometimes we say, “The mind felt inspired.” Something sparks that inspiration. We contemplate countless things in our minds. Our understanding shifts with circumstances, and the mind plays a pivotal role in this.

In other words, it’s not wrong to call the mind the centre of the entire body, as it governs all human actions. From it springs foresight, thoughts, inner strength, faith, and the ability to shape our actions and destiny. From the depths of the human mind, imagination expands, and the foundation of character is laid. Those who lack character in their minds cannot find a respectable place in society. No matter how much they try to appear good, they are governed by their mind.

Character-building is a key aspect of human life, as our behaviour aligns with the nature of our mind. Thus, building a good character is essential for a fulfilling life. A good character fosters a good society, which is why saints and sages always promote goodness. The mind’s mental strength, courage, and resilience are vital in facing any challenge. Through mental fortitude, humans turn the impossible into possible. The mind is the source of spiritual energy, enabling profound spiritual progress.

In all of life’s endeavours, our actions reflect our thoughts. If someone harbours ill intentions, reforming them is immensely difficult. Moving from evil to good is a form of penance; no one can shift from bad to good in a single day—it’s simply impossible. This is why saints, sages, and scholars emphasise the power of positive thinking to harness positive energy. Negative thoughts breed negativity, while positive thoughts foster positivity. Now, reflect: What is your mindset, and what do you think?
